The Vital Question

H. D. Perky (printed by the Providence Albertype Company), 1897. Pamphlet. Item #206638
ISBN: 281AIB1040909

8 by 10 inches. 34 pages plus two chromolithograph illustrations. Recipes promoting the physical, moral, and spiritual benefits of a diet based on shredded wheat. Henry D. Perky (1843-1906) was the inventory of machinery for manufacturing what he called 'little whole wheat mattresses' and his Cereal Machine Company, including its New Era Cooking School, was eventually absorbed into the Nabisco conglomerate. The recipes were developed by Mrs. Harriet A. Higbee, the superintendent of the cooking school. Third edition. Very good in printed brown, string-tied wrappers. Light creasing and wear to covers; a few recipes with pencil tick marks in the margins. Reprinted many times, but 19th century editions are uncommon.
