clxx, 268; 371 pages, plus ads. Jenkin was an engineer and is often credited with the invention of the cable car (telpherage). The collection of his papers includes a long essay on Darwin's On the Origin of Species, submarine telegraphy, trade unions, and other subjects. The novelist Robert Louis Stevenson contributed a 150-page essay on Jenkin, which first appeared here (and was later issued separately and in Stevenson's collected works). Rather uncommon. First edition (first printing), in the original maroon cloth binding. An ex-library set, with 19th century private library bookplates and stickers on the spine. Hinges starting.
