typed letter signed from Grove L. Johnson to Edward F. O'Day

1913. Trade Paperback. Item #294430

Typed letter signed, addressed to Edward F. O'Day, dated Feb. 3, 1913, on letterhead of 'Law Offices of Grove L. Johnson': 'Your article in 'Town Talk' about myself and the State Administration was very readable and interesting. You had one error, I did not 'fight' the nomination or election of my son as Governor. I kept silent. He assured me positively that he would not be a candidate. Upon that assurance I became a candidate for the Assembly. Afterwards he changed his mind and was a candidate. I could not withdraw. He very materially assisted in defaeting me. I did most earnestly fight his Vice-Presidential aspirations with most gratifying result. With best wishes, I am, Very truly yours, Grove L. Johnson'. Grove's son Hiram Johnson (1866-1945) was California Governor 1911-1917 (resigning in 1917) and California Senator 1917-1945, Grove L. Johnson (1841-1926) served in the US House of Representatives and 3 terms in the California Assembly ending in 1911. Excellent content of the relationship between father and son.
