1877. Ephemera. Item #298593

Copy in contemporary hand of letter, dated March 10, 1877, from Stephen M. Allen to J. O. Cole, Esq. Letter refers to an article in the 'Journal of this evening [in which] you mention a number of things (seeming to throw blame on me) which is not true' re the purchase of stock, 'the origin of the wharf Steamers to Provincetown [part of the Old Colony Railroad holdings] and my feelings in regard to extending the Railroad track there.' Discusses his position on the 'Town Committee' and his defense of 'my friends the Directors.' Allen feels 'abused by the very men I have supported, and in your case by the article over your name you not only abuse me, but falsify me, is heaping insult upon injury.' Allen expects Cole to 'correct such error as soon as possible.' The Old Colony Railroad, which is referred to in the letter, covered southeast Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island from 1845-1893.
