John Muir Plaster Medallion

circa 1910. Art - Original. Item #301881

9 by 9-1/4 inches; 1 pound, 8 ounces. Plaster medallion of the famed environmentalist, similar to the one hanging in the historic Strentzel-Muir House house in Martinez, CA. 'Helen Muir wrote that Gertrude Boyle in the early 1900s made a bust of John Muir and also a small plaque,' -- Historic Furnishings Report of the John Muir National Historic Site by the National Park Service. Gertrude Farquharson Boyle Kanno (1878-1937) was a San Francisco sculptor and portrait bust artist who modled figures including Albert Einstein, Jack London, Margaret Sanger, Joaquin Miller, Isadora Duncan, and Major League pitcher Christy Mathewson, whose bust by Kanno is on display at the Baseball Hall of Fame. Surface scuffed, small chip at the edge near Boyle's name. Cast with metal loop for hanging. Scarce. Works by Boyle were destroyed in two major California disasters more than a century apart: the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the 2018 Camp Fire.
