Illustrated in black-and-White with two maps laid in (Map in two sheets of the Tertiary Auriferous Gravel Deposits, and a Map showing the extent of the Hydraulic Mining Operations. A geological survey of the Auriferous Gravels gold mine in Nevada County, CA. Whitney was a professor of geology at Harvard University and was the chief of the California Geological Survey from 1860 to 1874. Whitney was known to have called John Muir an 'Ignoramus' over Muirs belief that Yosemite Valley was created by glacial movement, which turned out to be correct. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in green cloth covered boards and gilt text to spine and front cover, with a bit of soiling to boards, and some shelf wear; no dust jacket. Maps are near fine.
