Elimination of Discrimination in Employment: Extension of Remarks of Hon. Dennis Chavez of New Mexico in the Senate of the United States, Monday, May 26, 1947

United States Government Printing Office, 1947. Pamphlet. Item #78607

8 pages. A series of questions and answers about a proposed Senate Bill that would have ended discrimination in employment on the basis of 'race, religion, color, national origin, or ancestry.' Why should we outlaw discrimination in employment, Chavez asks? 'It is un-American,' he responds. A month later, President Truman would tell the NAACP that he opposed discrimination and later that year, Truman ended segregation in the armed forces. Seventeen more years would pass before Chavez's bill would become law. Dionisio 'Dennis' Chavez was the first Latino to be elected to a full term in the Senate (Octaviano Larrazolo, also from New Mexico, served for six months in 1928-29, completing the term of a deceased Senator). Chavez served from 1935 until his death in 1962. A near fine copy in wrappers (paperback).
