Item #209240 The American Mother Goose. Ray Wood, Ed Hargis, J. Frank Dobie.

The American Mother Goose

(Greystone Press), (1938). First Edition. Pamphlet. Item #209240

[32] pages. 5 by 7 inches. A collection of folk nonsense rhymes, which Wood called 'Peckerwood' verse. Each rhyme is illustrated by two drawings. Expectedly--based on the subject matter and the sources--many of the rhymes are racist. To his discredit Dobie, in his short introduction, manages to make racist references and he quotes only one rhyme, which also happened to be one of several that uses the N-word. *** An expanded edition of this book was published in hardcover by Lippincott in 1940. This first edition is uncommon, with just two holdings in OCLC. First edition (first printing). Wire staples rusted and the covers are grubby. However, the book is inscribed by Wood.

Price: $100.00
