First edition (first printing)? Sheets staple-bound into a manila folder as a binding. This copy inscribed to a painter, 'To R. B. Kitaj, with many thanks. David Carrier.' Kitaj, who also wrote about art, is thanked in the introduction 'for trying to make me a bit skeptical about formalism; although not skeptical enough ... I am sure.' Presumably this was printed in very small numbers for distribution to friends and colleagues.
