The World Painted: The Aesthetics of Visual Art

(the author), 1975. First Edition. Trade Paperback. Item #219943

178 pages. Photocopied typescript of an unpublished book that explores art beginning with Duchamp's urinal and then looks at representation, expression, Baudelaire's theory of modern art, formalism, psychoanalytic approaches, the copying of paintings, and other topics. *** Carrier earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1972 and has had a distinguished academic career in art criticism. First edition (first printing)? Sheets staple-bound into a manila folder as a binding. This copy inscribed to a painter, 'To R. B. Kitaj, with many thanks. David Carrier.' Kitaj, who also wrote about art, is thanked in the introduction 'for trying to make me a bit skeptical about formalism; although not skeptical enough ... I am sure.' Presumably this was printed in very small numbers for distribution to friends and colleagues.
