488 pages with design of house with two rooms on last page. This is Roe's first book, a novel occasioned by the Chicago fire of 1871. It was first serialized in the 'Evangelist' and made Roe widely known. His novels, with strong moral and religious purposes, did much to break down Puritan prejudices against works of fiction. Inscribed by the author on front free endpaper: 'David Perry, Esq., with the best wishes of the Author.' First edition (first printing). A good only copy in original brown cloth with gilt decorations on front cover and gilt lettering on spine. Title in black on front cover. Top 1/2 inch of spine is missing and bottom of spine is worn and frayed. Spine is faded. Covers are scuffed. Front hinge is broken and rear hinge is cracked. Signature of David Perry on front pastedown. No dust jacket.
