27 pages. On verso of title page are the lyrics for the 7 choral pieces. On page 1, following the title page, 'Musical Settings by Donald Martino of Seven Pious Pieces from His Noble Numbers or His Pious Pieces by Robert Herrick.' This is followed by 26 pages of musical notation with lyrics. The musical score was published in 1974 by E., C. Schirmer Music Co. and in 1998 by Dentalian. Donald Martino (1931-2005) was a Pulitzer Prize for music winner. The journal 'Perspectives in New Music' published a 292 page tribute to him. He was a student of Ernst Bacon at Syracuse University. Ernst Bacon (1898-1990) was a composer, pianist and conductor who composed over 250 songs in his career. He was awarded 3 Guggenheim Fellowships and a Pulitzer Scholarship in 1932 for his 2nd Symphony. He taught at Eastman School of Muisc, San Francisco Conservatory of Music (and conducted the SF Symphony-1928-30), Converse College, and, from 1947-1963, was professor and composer in residence at Syracuse University and professor emeritus from 1964. First edition (first printing). The title page and page following appear to be calligraphically composed by Martino. This is a unique dedicatory copy for Ernst Bacon. Bound in black thick cardboard covers with turtle binding. Martino provides the date of composition of each of the seven pieces at the end of the musical notation. Unfortunately the music portfolio has had water damage affecting the last 10 pages, blurring some of the notes and lyrics. With a holograph letter to Bacon from Martino, dated, February 11, 1972. Content of the letter is outstanding with Martino reflecting on the influence Bacon had on his work, discussing the origins of the pieces and how different technically they are from prior work. He further discusses his thoughts about the 12-tone system. Approximately 400 words.
