Original photogravure from Volume 4 of The North American Indian, facing page 210. Van Gelder paper. 'Good Bear (correctly Good Grizzly Bear), Dahpisi-tsaktsh: Born 1948 [in North Dakota]. Went on the war-path when eighteen; has been in sixteen battles and captured tethered horses twice, and on two occasions rescued unhorsed men in battle...Once while hunting he killed a bear, and his friend fastened the skin to slits in Good Bear's shoulders. As a sacrifice to the spirits, he then followed the back-trail of the bear until it came to the Missouri river, which he swam, though it was in the spring and the ice was breaking up.'
