The Yeates Institute operated from 1860-1863, closed then, and reopened in 1878. 1. Autograph letter signed from L. Bowman, undated, 'outlining some of the principal points that occur to me, as proper to be introduced into the Charter of the proposed Institute...' Four points are enumerated: 1. It shall be called the Yeates Institute to be established in or near the City of Lancaster, State of Penn.; 2. The object shall be under the auspices and in accordance with the principles of the Prot. Ep. Church, the education of young persons, in all the customary branchers of sound Academical Learning, Special regard being always had to the Training & Instruction of those who are interested for the Ministry in said Church; 3. The affairs of the corporation shall be conducted by a Board of Trustees to consist of ____ persons of whom the Rector or Rectors of the several Episcopal Churches in the City of Lancaster shall always be a part. Said Trustees shall have power to be [enumerate powers]. Any ____ member of the Board, present at a meeting lawfully called, shall be a quorum for the tranaction of business; 4. The Bp. of the Diocese of Pennsylvania shall be ex-off., a Visitor of the Institute. / 'I send per above some of the principal points that occue to me, as proper to be introduced into the Charter of the proposed Institute, & am very truly yrs.' 2. Autograph note, dated Sep. 14/60,signed by Bowman, Prest., addressed to Jasper Y. Congerphain (?sp) authorizing payment to Rev. Theo. A. Hopkins, 'quarter salary due to him Sep. 1/ 60, as Rector of the Institute.' Both letters previously folded. Rare documents of the founding of the Yeates Institute.
