228 pages. Book is a collection of Oshiewambo proverbs, a Bantu language in southwest Africa. Finnish missionaries arrived in the area in 1870 and led to Oshiwambo language in written form. Archer Taylor (1890-1973) was a specialist in American and European folklore, with a special interest in cultural history, literature, proverbs, riddles and bibliography. He taught at University of California, Berkeley, from 1939-1958. Inscribed to Colonel de Guinzbourg by Archer Taylor: 'For Colonel de Guinzbourg's proverb collection. Archer Taylor, 16 March, 1960.' First edition (first printing). A very good copy in blue cloth covers with gilt lettering. No dust jacket. Covers with edge and corner wear. Bookplate of Archer Taylor. Bookplate of Lt. Col. V. S. M de Guinzbourg, U. N. diplomat and noted proverb and aphorism collector. Included with a portion of addressed envelope with holograph address and return address by Taylor to Guinzbourg.
