William A. Chatto ((1799-1864) was an English writer. In 1848 he published 'Facts and Speculations on the Origin and History of Playing Cards,' which illustrated book the letter may be referring to. Anthanasios Christopoulos (1772-1847) was a celebrated Greek poet, scholar and jurist. 1. Autograph letter signed, single folded sheet, 4.4 x 7.25 inches when folded, written on first leaf only, dated Monday, Feb 28, /48, Portland St., addressed to Mr. J. R. Smith: 'Dear Sir, I have seen the drawings which Mr. Henning will forward. They are very much to my satisfaction; and, I doubt not, will please you also. They are most carefully made, being in exact accordance with the originals. They are well worth twice the money charged. Truly yours, Wm. A. Chatto.' Previously folded with address on outside and remnants of wax seal. 2. Autograph copy of poem on sheet, 4.5 x 4 inches, pasted to larger sheet, 4.5 x 7.25 inches: 'Dance of Death: from Christopu;los, in Davids' Parallel, (2 lines in Greek), Man;s like a Shadow in a stream; / Time's Still while we are flying; / Life's like the bubbles on the stream; / And Death alone undying. W. A. C. 11th March, 1848.' Previously folded with address for 'Mr. J. R. Smith, 4, Old Compton Street' on rear.
