Sheet, 4.5 x 7.75 inches, printed in black on cream with hand-coloring in white. Woodson Messick Cowan (1889-1977) was a cartoonist, illustrator and painter. In the 1940s he worked briefly on George Ahern's comic strip 'Our Boarding House,' featuring the popular Major Hoople character. Inscribed by the author: 'For Tommy Fox, with kindest regards, Wood Cowan.' . Also, in ink by Cowan, ''Hoople' from 1930-46.' Upper portion of sheet with Major Hoople and caption 'Because of his bulbous snozzle Hoople is the only man in th world who can smoke a cigar under a shower bath,' and 'You mustn't crane your neck to stare at 'em.' Lower portion with 3 young women with stylish hats (with hand-coloring) being looked by another somewhat shocked appearing woman.
