Single sheet letter. The Mobile and Ohio Rail Road was chartered in 1848 by the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee to span the distance between Mobile and the Ohio River in Cairo, Illinois. The first section between Mobile and Citronelle, Alabama opened in 1852. The line merged with the Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad in 1940 to form the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad. Single sheet, 5.1 x 6.6 inches, on ink on white laid paper. Dated March 10, 1856. Letter notifies the addressee (C. Dellinger, Esq, New York, presumed) of the new president of the Rail Road, Judge A. F. Hopkins and letting him know Judge Hopkins will be responding to the matter at hand. About 90 words. On rear is 'A. F. Irwin / Mobile March 10, 1856 / initials below.' Near fine condition, previously folded.
