Richard Eberhart (1904-2005) won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1966 for Selected Poems, 1930-1965; the National Book Award for Poetry for Collected Poems 1930-1976, the Bollinger Prize 1962. He was the Poet Laureat Consultant to the Library of Congress 1959-1961. Tom Parkinson (1920-1992) was a poet and professor of English at University of California, Berkeley. In 1961 he survived a murder attempt by a deranged former student who shot him in the face. 1. Typed letter signed, dated January 25, 1961, letterhead, Consultant in Poetry, The Library of Congress. Letter: 'Dear Tom and Ariel: Thank God you are saved! We are stupefied and disheartened to hear of the tragic affair. If there is anything we can do from here plaeae let us know. Betty joins me in sending love. We hope you are coming along nicely. (signed) With much affection, Dick Eberhart'. 2. Typed letter signed, dated Nov. 25, 1970, letterhead, 5 Webster Terrace, Hanover. Letter announces plans to be in Berkeley for Christmas with son and family. Requests Tom to obtain a reading for him in January with usual fee of $600. Signed Dick, with holograph addition to letter: 'P.S. The I. A. Richards are here for Thanksgiving and are in fine shape'. About 140 words. With 3-page biographical mimeograph with holograph corrections.
